Intelliconnect cables launched into space on SSTL satellite
At Intelliconnect, we are thrilled to share the news that several of our custom-designed, flexible cables have been successfully launched into space as part of VESTA-1, a 3U nanosatellite technology demonstration mission.
Intelliconnect customer Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd launched the satellite into a“575 km sun-synchronous orbit as part of Spaceflight’s SSO-A SmallSat Express Mission”. It was launched from the Vandenberg Air Force Base on board the Falcon 9 on 03/12/2018.
The purpose of the mission is to test a two-way VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) payload. This VDES has been developed by Honeywell Aerospace UK and aims to increase connectivity into remote maritime locations beyond phone networks as well as broader remote communications.
The brief provided by SSTL was to manufacture a number of specific cables suitable for use in outer space.
Our team have worked closely with SSTL over the last year to provide the flexible cables fit for space conditions, supporting the SSTL engineers in their design and manufacture needs and using their technical skills to propose materials and capabilities suited to the application
As per Intelliconnect’s high on-time delivery record, the team were required to deliver to a time-sensitive delivery schedule that adhered to the testing and launch needs of the satellite.
VESTA-1 was manufactured for Honeywell under funding from the UK Space Agency.
